We’ve built a solid reputation as experts in site work. And for good reason: We’ve had dirt under our nails longer than we can remember. King Enterprise Group is a comprehensive construction company made up of individuals who have always loved playing in the dirt.
Today, we’re not just digging to China on the playground — we’re clearing the way and
building communities.
We know that the success of any industrial construction project begins with a solid foundation. We’re specialists in executing projects of significant proportion: surveying land, excavating sites, grading surfaces and laying foundations. And while every job presents its own unique set of challenges, we at King have the time-honed experience and expertise to complete your project’s first phase — on time and within budget. And for us, it’s all prep work: a process to ready the project for the next phase, where we are ready to assist again if needed.

Our world is built on concrete. It bears weight and supports our structures. It acts as the glue that holds our world together.
We at King Enterprise Group have been helping people realize their dreams by partnering on projects that harnessed the power of energy, underground facilities and vast culverts that tunneled beneath the earth’s surface and edifices that stretched to the sky.
Concrete is our history, our lifeblood. It is what we inherently know, what we mindfully do. Pouring a connection that’s precision-engineered to within a thousandth of an inch to fit with a counterpart so significant in scale that it can only be moved once — well, that’s a source of enormous pride, but it’s also just in a day’s work.
Even though the process of pouring concrete has changed little throughout the last 150 years, the technology behind the process has evolved into a fine science, and we’ve incorporated vanguard engineering techniques while developing a few of our own. By embracing the technology, we’ve refined it and, in the end, we’ve realized that we are concrete and concrete is King.

Municipal Water Blending Facility
The McPherson BPU is a municipally owned utility providing electric and water service to approximately 8,000 customers in the City
of McPherson and portions of McPherson County. It boasts the
lowest electric rates in the state of Kansas and ranks among the lowest nationwide.
The scope of this project was to provide a water clear well reservoir, pumping station and treatment facility for the multiple water wells that service the domestic water requirements for the City of McPherson.
1129 West Avenue A, McPherson, Kan.
$4 million, 1.5 million gallons of water storage, 4,000 square feet of building area.
June ’08, excavation of clear well begun. February ’09, structural concrete completed. August ’09, building to be completed.
Several challenges were overcome with good preplanning and a strong working relationship with the engineer, Burns & McDonnell. First, the design required that the top concrete slab be placed prior to backfilling the walls. Additional time and money were spent making the earth wall excavations stable over a long period of time. Additional preplanning addressed the forming system used for the edge of the top slab, as well as the safety of the employees working near the edge. Second, the shoring system used to support the cast-in-place top slab needed to be sectional to be removable through small openings after concrete placement and curing. The owner is performing some of the piping work. Accurate scheduling and job site coordination meetings helped keep productivity rates very high.
The City of McPherson BPU has had a long-standing relationship with King Enterprise Group on various large projects. Through the years, we have completed major electrical substations, gas turbine foundations, new power plant foundations, underground and overhead conduit runs, site drainage and pavement, and buildings for the BPU in the past. The client asked us to review the engineering progress drawings and provide budget updates and constructability reviews throughout the development of the project.
Burns & McDonnell Architecture and Engineering — Kansas City, Mo.
McPherson Concrete — McPherson, Kan.
Wray Roofing — Newton, Kan.
Jordan Masonry — Hutchinson, Kan.
A significant part of the project was the forming and placing of cast-in-place concrete. We chose a Symons forming system that gave us the necessary pour rate, gang forming options, limited through bolt openings and shoring sections. We leased cranes, as different sizes were needed for the slab/foundation work and shorter reaches were needed for the walls/top slab. As this structure will “hold water” for its life, a lot of product selection research was obtained and shared with the team. Construction joints were detailed, reviewed and approved long before actual installation on the project site. A comprehensive preplanning process saved the client time and money while ensuring the expected outcome.
The client was able to use a long-standing relationship with King Enterprise Group to achieve the desired outcomes, knowing that quality, productivity and safety would never be compromised. The value of honest and open relationships in today’s general contractor world was evident with this water blending facility.

East-side Control Room
The National Cooperative Refinery Association (NCRA) is an interregional petroleum cooperative owned by three regional farm supply cooperatives that distribute NCRA’s products to their affiliated local cooperatives in the north-central United States.
The NCRA needed to protect its personnel to meet certain blast criteria with close proximity to operating units. We built a precast building with special features to ensure the safety and continued operation even under the most extreme events.
NCRA, McPherson, Kan.
6,100 square feet
September 2003 through June 2004
The site was extremely confined. Material deliveries were coordinated with plant personnel while other projects were performed near the site. The precast erection sequencing was difficult due to existing overhead obstructions limiting the crane’s size. Our crews and subcontractors had to finish out the space while still following the regulations of an operating refinery.
The owner was looking for a general contractor to self-perform a large amount of the work, eliminating the need to hire one-time subcontractors. Our electrical and mechanical subcontractors were preselected and a coordinated schedule and scope of work were developed to maximize our combined strengths. By working as a unified team of refinery/plant-oriented companies, we reduced the amount of required owner oversight.
Piping & Equipment Company — Wichita, Kan.
Southwestern Electrical Company — Wichita, Kan.
Wray Roofing — Newton, Kan.
Our first step was to understand the project scope and specific limitations of the ongoing operations, as well as becoming familiar with the workings of operational refineries and plants. We developed a schedule with input from several subcontractors and extended our capabilities, reducing the unnecessary impact to the client’s safety and work flow. We limited the amount of on-site deliveries each day to accommodate others working near this site. And we quickly built the exterior shell to free up adjoining work areas, closed the structure by winter to allow continued construction and allow for the interior space and exterior phasing completion in a timely manner. Project management was very rigorous, as almost every material item had a required blast or fire rating — not common to the general building practice. Our submittal log was long and thorough, ensuring plant personnel safety.
Project completion was on time and within budget. The client’s operational staff was able to train and move the operation controls in a coordinated schedule. By properly selecting a small group of qualified, dedicated team members and hiring additional expertise, we accomplished our goal.

In 1980, King Enterprise Group was created, founded on decades of leadership and hard work. Over the years, the company realized success through its focus on three simple principals: Treat people right; do what you say; and execute every project as if your reputation were on the line.
As time progressed, many successful projects were completed and the company became known as one of the premier industrial contractors in Kansas.
In 2013, King Enterprise Group joined the Hutton Construction family, sharing the company's focus on safety, team work and quality. Under the leadership of Hutton Construction, King Enterprise Group continues to deliver the same high level of service and attention-to-detail while incorporating Hutton Construction's pursuit to deliver innovative construction services and solutions.

The scoop.
King Enterprise Group and Hutton Construction will co-host a chamber coffee and open house starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21. The coffee and open house are open to area business and community leaders. Hutton Construction President Ben Hutton will speak about the acquisition of King Enterprise Group and the ongoing merger of the two companies. Hutton Construction and KEG leaders will both be on hand to answer questions and provide more information about both companies and their work.
The coffee will be held in the KEG shop, located behind the company offices at 1401 S. Highway 81 Bypass, McPherson.
King Enterprise Group continues work on a compressor facility located outside Shidler, Okla., for Chaparral Energy.
Chaparral Energy is a publicly traded energy company based in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Shilder location is part of the company's Mid-Continent operations and its plan to grow infrastructure to dominate the Oklahoma oil market.
The approximately three-acre project is being overseen by KEG Project Manager Phil Wankum and has been under construction since September 2012.
The facility, which compresses carbon dioxide to help capture and surface oil, has been constructed in several phases. To date, KEG crews have poured: two compressor and three transformer pads; 40 piers for pipe racks; foundations for two cooling units and a slug catcher.
Site work for the three acre project was also completed prior to the pouring of concrete. Wankum said crews still have duct bank, electrical, piping and pipe rack work to complete.
King Enterprise Group is now a part of the Hutton Construction family - New ownership, same commitment to lasting relationships and superior construction services.
Hutton Construction, a leading commercial construction company based in Wichita, has purchased King Enterprise Group.
"King Enterprise Group has been a growing force for a number of years," said Ben Hutton, president of Hutton Construction. "This acquisition positions Hutton Construction to further strengthen our presence in the industrial construction marketplace."
Hutton Construction was founded in 1992 and is a proven leader in commercial construction management and design/build delivery methods. Hutton has built a strong portfolio of work throughout Kansas and the Midwest. Hutton Construction and KEG have a shared history, having teamed up on several construction projects in the past.
"Both companies share a focus on safety, team work and quality, so we see the transition being a very easy one," said Hutton. "The opportunity to bring King Enterprise Group into the Hutton Construction family was very appealing and we couldn't be more excited."

The Associated General Contractors of Kansas has honored King Enterprise Group Inc. with a 2013 State Building Award for the construction of the North Side Control Room at the National Cooperative Refinery Association in McPherson. The company received the Award of Excellence for new construction valued at $6 million - $10 million. KEG's Tom Saffel and Gary Spencer accepted the award during the AGC of Kansas annual meeting Jan. 17 in Wichita.
King Enterprise Group Inc. is starting 2013 off with an eye on the scale. Company safety director Michael Wallace is spearheading a company-wide weight loss challenge, encouraging all employees to take inventory of their eating and exercise habits.
The challenge is not just about numbers on a scale, Wallace said. Healthier employees are safer employees.
"The healthier the workforce, the safer they are going to be on the job site," Wallace said. "The better physical condition a person is in, the less strain the work will have on their bodies."
The challenge will officially begin Jan. 3 and end April 26. Participants must weigh in at the office at least once a month. Wallace said 15 KEG employees have committed to taking part in the challenge.
The person with the greatest percentage of pounds lost at the conclusion of the challenge will receive a cash prize.
Wallace said he is leaving the "how" of weight loss up to each employee. He has, however, encouraged iPhone users to enlist the help of the My Fitness Pal application to track calories. He has also heard of some participants planning new fitness regimens to help drop the pounds.
"We're letting everyone go about achieving their weight loss goals on their own but we are going to be encouraging all types of healthy behaviors during the challenge, including exercise, eating right and tracking calorie consumption," Wallace said.
The weight loss challenge is part of KEG's ongoing efforts to improve workplace wellness and safety. In 2012, KEG became one of the first companies in McPherson to participate in the WorkWell KS initiative, sponsored by the Kansas Health Foundation. The program provides businesses with tools and programs to help create healthier employees and workplaces. Other KEG efforts organized through the WorkWell KS program include the summer employee hydration campaign and daily job site stretching.

Central Christian College of Kansas hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the college’s future tennis complex on June 15 to commemorate the start of two new campus construction projects.

“Today is the first step in many more projects as we open ourselves up and grow,” College President Hal Hoxie said.
McPherson Mayor Tom Brown and college faculty, staff and supporters were on hand for the ceremony.
The two planned projects include a tennis complex and Heritage Plaza.
The tennis courts will be located on the west edge of the campus and will include four courts. The top-quality surface will be constructed using post-tensioned concrete. There are currently no tennis courts located on the Central Christian College campus.
The second project is Heritage Plaza, located between Broadhurst Student Center and Science Hall. The plaza is part of the college's capital campaign and will include a commemorative clock tower, performance stage and canopy, north roundabout, monument sign and paving and seat walls. It will occupy the section of South Maple Street currently closed to traffic.
The groundbreaking ceremony also marked the beginning of a long-term partnership between Central Christian College and King Enterprise Group Inc. of McPherson. KEG will act as the college’s construction management contractor for all future construction, renovation and maintenance needs. The partnership allows for a unified approach between KEG and the college, utilizing the best-value approach to reduce cost and risk for all parties involved.
Steve Schmidt, director of engineering at Prairie Landworks Inc., and Randy Clark, owner of Clark Architecture & Design, are both working with the college and KEG on design and development of the projects.
KEG crews have already begun site work for the tennis courts. Construction on both will continue through the summer months.

At King Enterprise Group Inc., we possess unique traits that make us well suited for this industry, yet those of us in leadership positions have a slightly nontraditional view of our roles. While we proactively help guide each project from conception, through engineering, into construction and into actual production, we do more from the philosophy of a support role. We love working together as a group to achieve our customers’ desired outcomes. And we win only when the entire team achieves the desired outcome. This is what leadership means to KEG.

Gary graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Construction Science in 1986. Since that time Gary has grown within the industry as a true leader and owner advocate.
He has experienced the on-site field operations, estimating, project administration, and operations management throughout these past 20-plus years. Known for his strong ethical leadership, Gary provides honest leadership of the assembled team.
And his commitment to our company extends beyond our employees. In October 2012, Gary was named operations manager for the company and now oversees and coordinates all of the field employees and activities. His trust and leadership in the company allow him to bring together employees at all levels to help King Enterprise Group continue to move forward and succeed.
We are fortunate to have Gary working with us, and we trust you will have the opportunity to have that same experience.

Michael Wallace joined the King Enterprise Group Inc. team in September 2012 as the company's safety director. He brings with him seven years of experience in the highway and civil construction industry.
His skills are proving valuable as KEG strives to continue to raise the bar on its efforts to produce the best quality work and do so with zero HSE incidents.
In his previous position, Michael assisted with the implementation of a company accident prevention and environmental protection program and lead the staff to a 75-percent reduction in its total injury and total recordable incident rate.
Michael gains a full understanding of each project and ensures the work is being done within the specifications, ardently documented and proactively managed.

Since July 2010, Shannon has managed the technology assets of King Enterprise Group Inc. He is thoroughly devoted to enabling business with the use of technology; through improving efficiencies and effectiveness in all aspects of the business. Shannon helps the company leverage technology as a strategic asset as opposed to managing it as overhead.
After 13 years in the technology industry, Shannon has gained a wealth of knowledge in improving business operations for many different verticals. Before joining KEG, he served as a technology consultant for a wide variety of businesses. This is where he gained a firm belief that strong client relationships are a key to business success. Shannon has taken over management of KEG's business development efforts and looks forward to strengthening the company's client relationships.
Raised in the farming communities of northwest Kansas, Shannon brings a strong work ethic and a straight-forward handshake approach to all endeavors. KEG has easily developed a strategic relationship with Shannon and has complete confidence that you will do the same.

It’s easy to see, our employees, subcontractors and suppliers are our greatest resources. Our business depends on the safety and efficiency of our daily practices; compromise either, and the entire system suffers. That is why we are so meticulous about job safety, ensuring that we consistently meet or exceed OSHA standards.
We are committed to a culture that recognizes safety as a core value — our efforts create an environment that’s responsive to the immediate needs of our customers and employees. Since every job is different, we employ a full-time safety director to monitor activities at each site, ensuring that no one’s at risk and productivity — including yours — remains constant.
As our industry evolves, we continue to pioneer new benchmarks for safety while educating our clients and employees. Because at King Enterprise Group, we’re confident that working without incident is possible; no time lost since 1994 is proof of our resolution. And though that seems like a long time to go without an incident, it’s not nearly long enough for us.
In May 2012, KEG created its first employee safety committee. The group of seven employees is tasked with helping company leaders enhance the company's safety program. In addition to this primary mission, the safety committee encourages employees to participate in the safety process for the betterment of all concerned. Two KEG employees also completed training through the Kansas Health Institute's WorkWellKS program, which is designed to help companies implement wellness programs and policies into their workplace. The safety committee will incorporate wellness initiatives into its responsibilities.
KEG employees have endured almost two weeks of consistent triple-digit temperatures, with no relief in site. Heat, humidity and physical labor can create dangerous work conditions for employees that are not careful to remain hydrated and cool. To encourage employees to drink water throughout the day, KEG safety committee members created 32 ounce water bottles with the saying "Don't Wait, Hydrate!" to remind workers that it's never to too soon to begin taking in fluids. The water bottles were distributed to employees during the July company-wide safety meeting. Employees were encouraged to use the bottles on the job site and try to drink to bottles of water daily.

Nothing proves a job well done better than the actual job. At King Enterprise Group, we've helped a wide variety of clients and have earned their trust and praise, as well as their repeat business. Take a look for yourself at King's latest work.
King Enterprise Group Inc. crews are beginning their third month of work on a new road and load-out station at the National Cooperative Refinery Association in McPherson. KEG is constructing a new road to the refinery's sulfur recovery unit and an automated self-loading truck rack that will allow drivers to bypass the main refinery facilities and load fertilizer from the unit more efficiently.
Currently, trucks have to go through the refinery to load fertilizer and use an aging truck loading area. The new road will reduce traffic inside the refinery and streamline the loading process. Andy Gamble is the project superintendent and Jerek Wasinger is serving as field engineer. The job is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2013.
King Enterprise Group is in the final stages of three above-ground storage tank projects for tanks located along the Jayhawk Pipeline in Central Kansas.
Work outside of El Dorado, Kan., included 220-foot concrete ringwall tank foundation for CB&I. A 300-foot by 300-foot side pad and 30-foot wide crane way were also created at the site. Additional side grading and improvements were included in the job package.
Preparation for another new storage tank took place outside Chase, Kan. A 135-foot concrete ring wall foundation was created for CB&I. Site improvements and a containment dike were completed for Jayhawk Pipeline. A 75-foot by 100-foot gravel staging pad was construction for tank contractors CB&I.
In addition to the new tank foundations, King crews rehabilitated an existing above-ground storage tank outside Lyons, Kan., which was originally placed with no foundation. Crews created a new ring wall and liner for the tank. A new tank bottom was installed by contractors HMT.
King Enterprise Group is putting the finishing touches on a blast-resistant control building at the National Cooperative Refinery Association facility outside McPherson, Kan. The building will serve as a check-in point for a region of the plant and will allow employees to monitor the operations of specific pieces of equipment. The two-story building includes a kitchen and eating area that houses six large refigerators, two ovens and ranges and four microwaves. There is seating for 10 but the area will accomidate more.
Crews will continue to connect fiber optic cables for equipment, control panels and circuits. The cables are pulled through duct banks to the building's basement.
King was the general contractor for the project.
Williams Energy employees previously working throughout the Conway, Kan., area are now under one roof. King Enterprise Group employees put the final touches on the administration building and control room earlier this month. The two-building campus includes a 14,000 square-foot pre-engineered metal building and a 5,000 square-foot structural masonry building.
In June, King employees completed construction on a storm shelter for employees at the new office and control building. The above-ground shelter was constructed from pre-cast concrete. View Project
King Enterprise Group has traveled south for some recent projects including a tank batter project outside Cherokee, Okla.
The project is owned by Parnon Gathering Inc., a Tulsa, Okla., a crude oil logistics company, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Parnon Holdings Inc. Project Manager Jeff Bailey said King was contracted by Integrated Pipeline Services Inc. of Tulsa, Okla., to complete grading and site work and by Matrix Service Company to create two tank foundations.
King’s portion of the project included: clearing approximately nine acres of land, creating dykes and secondary containment systems and creating two concrete tank rings, one measuring 95 feet in diameter and the other 42 feet in diameter. The project is part of Parnon’s Great Salt Plains Pipeline that will transport crude oil from southern Kansas and central and western Oklahoma to Parnon’s tanks in Cushing, Okla.
Rainfall and mud delayed the project but work is expected to be completed around the first of April. The project is being managed by project superintendent Scott Osche.
Since the early '90s, we have worked with the NCRA building a lengthy list of projects, involving every area of a working refinery's operation and storage facilities. Our largest customer by number of working man-hours over the past 20 years is NCRA. King recently acted as the general contractor for NCRA's new fire station and training facility, which opened in November 2011, and is continuing work on a new blast-resistant control room.
Our ongoing relationship with the BPU started in the 1980s. BPU provides power and distribution for a large part of McPherson County. Throughout the years, we have built turbine generator foundations, electrical duct banks, new electrical substations, manholes, pavement repairs, equipment grouting, concrete pavement, maintenance building and a variety of on-call work. In 2010, King completed the final phase of the utilities new administration and customer service office. The project entailed renovating an early 1900s building.
Supporting the public schools that our employees are involved with is important to us at King Enterprise Group. Throughout the years, we have provided many services for these institutions, particularly on recreational and athletic projects. Track and field events, outdoor basketball courts, drainage improvements, pavement repair and new pavement, safety and ADA corrections, even full-blown building expansions: We have assisted almost every district in which our employees live. We like the challenges of working within tight summer schedules or performing quick fixes during the school year.
